About This Place

Ukrainian Village is a culinary gem nestled in the heart of Vancouver’s West End, offering an authentic taste of Ukrainian and vegetarian cuisine that feels like a warm, nostalgic embrace. Located at 815 Denman Street, this charming restaurant effortlessly captures the spirit of traditional Eastern European cooking while providing a cozy, inviting atmosphere that welcomes locals and visitors alike.

Step inside and you’ll immediately notice the subtle, heartfelt touches that set Ukrainian Village apart from the city's many eateries. The decor exudes homeliness with a rustic charm, and the hospitality resonates with that unique warmth – akin to dining in a beloved relative’s kitchen. Plus, spotting the staff in traditional Ukrainian dress adds a lovely cultural touch, making the dining experience not just a meal, but a celebration of heritage.

The menu is a lovingly curated journey through classic Ukrainian dishes, designed to please both meat lovers and vegetarians. Among the standout options, the Cabbage Rolls are a must-try — stuffed generously with rice, ground beef, and pork, then baked to a tender perfection in a rich tomato and carrot sauce. Paired with creamy mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, this dish serves as a comforting, hearty centerpiece that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.

For those seeking traditional flavors with robust depth, the Beef Borsch and Beef Stroganoff with mashed potatoes evoke savory, soul-warming sensations, their complex flavors perfectly balanced and deeply satisfying. Meanwhile, the Kiev Cutlet impresses with its crispy breaded exterior and juicy, garlicky filling that bursts with flavor. Lamb Shanks, roasted tenderly in a red wine sauce and accompanied by rice and classic salads, offer a rustic richness that complements the more delicate elements of the menu.

Vegetarian diners will find delight in options like the fresh Grandma’s Garden Salad, bursting with crisp tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, and dill, dressed simply with sunflower oil to let the natural freshness shine. The vegetarian cabbage rolls also provide a thoughtfully crafted, flavorful alternative, showcasing the kitchen’s commitment to diverse palates.

Many patrons rave about the pierogies — especially the sauerkraut-filled variety — packed with a satisfying tang and tender chew that bring a genuine taste of Ukrainian comfort food to the table. Don’t forget to indulge in the Napoleon Cake, a delicate layered dessert that’s both sweet and light, a perfect finale to your meal.

The drink selection is curated to complement the menu’s hearty flavors. The crisp, refreshing Pilsener Urquell pairs beautifully with the rich, slow-cooked dishes, balancing every mouthful with a crisp finish.

Reviewers consistently praise Ukrainian Village for its authenticity and generous portions. Matthew S describes the cabbage rolls as “delicious and filling,” while Darian Yee calls the food “seriously insane,” applauding the flavors of the pierogies and Ukrainian sausage. Local regular Leo Huang highlights the uncommercialized charm and soulful hospitality, while Boris Velinov appreciates the personalized meal recommendations and the “perfect lunch experience.” Meanwhile, Autumn_Kiko fondly recalls the nostalgic flavors that have remained unchanged over the decades, underscoring the restaurant’s dedication to tradition.

Ukrainian Village isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a heartfelt homage to Ukrainian culinary heritage that invites you to slow down, savor deep, comforting flavors, and reconnect with the simple pleasures of homemade food. Whether you’re craving classic schnitzel, rich borsch, or tender lamb shanks, this West End staple promises an authentic, soul-satisfying dining experience that keeps guests returning again and again.

Visiting from out of town and sought out this spot to try some Ukrainian cuisine that is rare in my hometown. Definitely worth the try! Ordered the Ukrainian dinner and was very satisfied with the portion. The cabbage rolls are delicious and filling, and I enjoyed the mix of pierogi's (the sauerkraut ones were especially enjoyable). The sausage was a little lacking but only in comparison to the rest of the plate. They were offering discounted drinks with a dinner order too, adding value to the meal. Overall very satisfied and would return if and when I'm back in town!

A local mainstay on the northern end of Denman Street, this restaurant has retained a soul that is often lost in the more commercialised eateries around Vancouver. The decor had an unmistakably touch of homeliness, and the waitress, who looked absolutely stunning in her traditional dress, provided hospitality more akin to a stay at a relative’s place. The menu was easy to navigate and items were very reasonably priced. There must have been a magician in the kitchen because the meal served was incredibly captivating. The plates came filled to the brim and each component of the meal was packed with unique flavours that worked well with each other. The ingredients used were on the simpler side but were incredibly balanced across meats and vegetables and nothing felt over processed or over seasoned. For reference, my wife and I sampled a considerable cross section of the Ukrainian cuisine. We had as our starter the Solianca (a tangy sour cream and tomato soup). For mains, we ordered 1) the Roasted Duck served with Mashed Potato and Coleslaw, and 2) the ‘Ukrainian Dinner’: a diverse sampling platter of pierogis (three different fillings), cabbage rolls, coleslaw salad, sausage, sour cream and mustard. We also ordered a shot of Stolichnaya (a vodka) and Ukrainian Iced Tea as drinks, and had a Kiev Cake as dessert. While the portion sizes were massive, we did manage to finish everything. As one of the few independent places that continues to serve a good ol’ classic meal, this place is sure to please even when everything else around this city keeps choppin’ and changin’.

We had lunch at the Ukrainian Village restaurant today. After a long bike ride at Stanley Park the family sat down for some traditional Ukrainian food with grandma‘s cooking ready to be served. Elena did an excellent job of educating us on which meals were ideal for our family and we ended up trying a sampling of just about everythingperfect lunch experience or dinner.

Having Ukrainian food reminds me of my youth. The Ukrainian Village is a place that has been here for decades and the menu hasn't changed because it's still that good. Classic dishes from Pirogies to Pelminis and schnitzel and pickled herring with sour cream were just a few of our samplings for friends from Japan. We wanted to share this with them and I hope they enjoyed it. I guess the only thing was the beef in the strogonoff was a bit chewy. But the sauce was bang on. Every now and then we look forward to coming here and having a nice comfort food meal.

Seriously insane food! I almost don’t want to write this review because I don’t want my new favourite restaurant downtown to become too packed! Food: The perogies, cabbage rolls, Ukrainian sausage, sauerkraut, and chicken soup were all amazingly flavourful and filling! Even the mustard they used was special, tasting like “real” mustard vs the fake heinz stuff. My girlfriend and were barely able to finish our plates, all for $40 (you could definitely fill two people up for less if you order different things) Atmosphere: The waitress is dressed in a traditional Eastern European outfit which added to the vibe, plus the restaurant has some really unique decor, looking more like a Ukrainian heritage museum than a restaurant. There is no lack of exciting things to see in the walls!

I had an incredible experience at Ukrainian Village. Server Olena was fantastic - super friendly, attentive and knew every detail of the menu. Her recommendations were spot on. The decor is beautiful reminding me of Ukraine. Fresh lighting and quiet music that creates really cosy atmosphere. I highly recommend trying their homemade food, especially cabbage rolls and borscht - absolutely delicious and full of flavour. Don’t walk past this place if you’re hungry and in the area. You won’t regret coming in - the food, service, and overall experience are top tier.

The most lovely, casual, nostalgic restaurant for anyone looking to feel some genuine hospitality and enjoy Ukrainian comfort foods. The service is always so lovely. The kompot was refreshing and the cakes are beautifully made. Cannot recommend the medovyk (Ukrainian honey cake) enough. The layers of dough are wonderfully soft and not too sweet, and the tang of the cream was light and smooth. My friends loved the Napolean cake. Thank you so much and Слава Україні!
